Friendship Tree

We are reading the Outsider’s right now. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost is a poem Ponyboy shares with Johnny as they hide in the church.

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

The poem is basically about:

  • First leaves of spring (new, gold) → quickly change to green.
  • Dawn is fleeting.
  • Beauty and innocence fade quickly.

Life’s best moments are brief but precious.

Youth, innocence, purity, hope, beauty—all things that don’t last forever.

Now, Tatum wrote her own:

Friendship Tree
By: Tatum Hay

(inspired by Nothing Gold Can Stay from The Outsiders)

 Friendship is like a tree.

They are always there for you and me.

But sometimes a storm comes and blows.

This storm is very strong and shows

That maybe this friend isn’t that good

Maybe their real wood

Is rotting

And then they were plotting

To ruin your heart

From the start.

Friends come and go

But don’t let the bad ones show

You that you suck

Because they are bad luck

And you know that they are wrong.

Friendship is like a tree

where strong branches can show you belong.
